Abstract Purpose of Review In this review, we provide a brief history intraocular robotic surgical systems and review the latest technological advancements. The goals are to (a) readers with clear understanding important work that has been done in field; (b) illuminate existing challenges towards full clinical adoption; (c) speculate on future directions. Recent Findings majority university research settings, although two have evaluated human trials one system is commercially available for use patients. Summary procedures will depend results ongoing success recent start-up companies. Many remain before such can become safe effective treatment options. However, bright promise.

Robotic Systems and Surgical Education

This experimental study aimed at evaluating the efficiency of robots in the learning of surgical techniques. We recruited 40 surgeons, divided them into 2 groups of 20, each of which used the robotic system. The first group consisted of experienced physicians, and the second group comprised physicians in training. Each surgeon was allowed to use the da Vinci robotic system for 30 minutes twice ...

Automated kinematic generator for surgical robotic systems.

Unlike traditional assembly line robotic systems that have a fixed kinematic structure associated with a single tool for a structured task, next-generation robotic surgical assist systems will be required to use an array of end-effector tools. Once a robot is connected with a tool, the kinematic equations of motion are altered. Given the need to accommodate evolving surgical challenges and to a...

Image Guided Robotic Systems for Focal Ultrasound Based Surgical Applications

Surgical resection remains the mainstay for conventional treatment of cancers/tumors. Normally, a margin area surrounding the cancer is removed to minimize relapse. However, due to the need for large access wounds for excising deep-seated abnormalities, traditional open surgery is associated with several operative and post-operative complications resulting into high morbidity and mortality rate...

The Evolution and Ergonomics of Robotic-Assisted Surgical Systems

A surgical robot has been defined as “a computer-controlled manipulator with artificial sensing that can be reprogrammed to move and position tools to carry out a range of surgical tasks” (Dasgupta et al, 2005). The first fully automated surgical device used in clinical practice was developed by Wickham (Harris et al, 1997) to resect prostates in the 1980’s at Guy’s Hospital in London. Currentl...

Dynamics and Motion Control of Wheeled Robotic Systems

Mobile robotic systems, which include a mobile platform with one or more manipulators, mounted at specific locations on the mobile base, are of great interest in a number of applications. In this paper, after thorough kinematic studies on the platform and manipulator motions, a systematic methodology will be presented to obtain the dynamic equations for such systems without violating the base n...
